ICY COAL TONS
2017

Icy Coal Tons is a web-based animation created by young artist Leandro Estrella expressly for Athanor №5 conclusive exhibition. This piece originated as a sum of Estrella’s previous research around themes such as iconoclasty and destruction art. Since 2013, the artist has been gathering still and motion pictures on a Tumblr platform and a Youtube playlist. Both of these channels became raw sources for a digital environment eventually called Icy Coal Tons (word scramble for “iconoclasty”). Inside this scenario, stacks of crystallized debris float and revolve, overlapping up to the point when they completely fill the screen frame. The scene structure is different every time, according to the algorithm and to external conditions (browser, data speed, …). Random images are captured from the artist’s tumblr and emerge inside the crystals’ surfaces, like projected references lost in space. The background concurs to shape the final appearance, oscillating between a pitch black void and video material sourced from the youtube playlist. The rendered environment acts as an enchanting lullaby, a relaxing mantra in which the referenced artworks are kept as jarred treasures, while at the same time being almost unrecognizable and completely decontextualized.

Born in Córdoba (Argentina) in 1991, Leandro Estrella is an emerging artist, particularly prominent on the European scene. He works and experiments with a plurality of materials and media, tending to the exploration of new technologies, which he adds to his artwork. In recent years, his artistic research is based on the paradoxical relationship between creative destruction and destructive creation, which he articulates with other subjects such as time and memory.
